The Footsteps program at Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness » is troubled youth program designed for a co-ed group for students ages 10 – 14. As a “middle school” group, these students are more concrete in their nature, emotionally reactive at times, and less socially sophisticated compared to their adolescent counterparts. What is so endearing and refreshing is their desire to have fun, be creative, and take risks. They are willing to participate in any type of initiative or group activity. These students might bring fears or worries about how their peers view them, but those concerns aren’t as extreme and ingrained. “Footsteppers” often seek connection with adults, which translates to lots of shared meals and games with staff, as well as other students.
